Module Evaluation

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed this module. I felt like it has challenged my creative thinking and developed my skills as a designer. Each brief that I chose I felt were answered in an appropriate and effective way. I've found that the briefs that I chose are more art based than type or editorial, this is something I believe worked to my advantage as it was something I enjoyed doing however I feel this may be the blame as to why I felt myself so lost on some briefs as I strove too far away from the principles of graphic design and focused more on creating something that looked pretty. However I'm not suggesting that the briefs did not contain any conceptual meaning but that I struggled to keep structure within the brief leaving some outcomes looking amateur and rushed. The method in answering the briefs as always helped initiate ideas and inform my mind on the topic I was researching. Starting off with research using primary and secondary rescourses helped my investigation on the brief and how to approach it, after thoroughly researching into every aspect of the brief I usually have a few ideas floating around which I then jot down in my notebook. Trying not to knuckle down on one idea I made sure I exhausted every idea I had to ensure that if the idea I developed further did not work I would have previous ideas to fall back on and try out. The strengths I have found in my own work is the illustrative style I have tried which I think can be drastically improved in future modules. Type is extremely hard but is still something I want to build a good enough skill in, however after purchasing a graphics tablet I found that drawing various illustrative styles on that really helped my ideas and answered the briefs in an appropriate way. Although I know I still have a long way to go when it comes to illustrations and using Illustrator and Photoshop, with future workshops and a lot of practice I believe I can get to a good enough standard by third year which is something I'm extremely excited about. My weaknesses I believe start with time management, I say this with every evaluation but I believe I am improving each time to get my work in on time to a good enough standard. As this module was a long one I found that I was running out of motive by the time it came to submission however I was still pleased with the outcomes I had created and the way I had responded to the briefs. Some briefs were a lot stronger than others which I think is very clear, two of them I literally had next to no time to do and had to use time very efficiently to achieve what I did, however I do not believe this is exactly a weak point as I've learnt I can answer briefs in a short amount of time, but in future I will be better at responding to briefs if was in that situation again. Another weakness I believe is colour. I need to investigate and study further into colour because I believe thats what let me down on some particular briefs but once I get a grasp of I think will drastically improve my work and final outcomes.

Overall I have enjoyed this module even though I found it extremely challenging. Entering competitions for the first time was daunting at first but I soon found its not the end of the world and to stop fretting so much about what other people think of my work. The first brief I did was the Royal Mint brief where I had to design the new one pound coin for the UK coming in 2017. Thinking I had missed the deadline until the day before I think the outcome was okay but nothing exciting, I believe the concept was there and with more time the outcome could have been presented in a more effective and appropriate way. The second brief I chose was the christmas card one for Leeds College Of Art, once again I thought I had missed the deadline until three days before and feel if I had more time and feedback from crits I could have definitely improved the visual side of the design before rushing into handing it in on time. The third brief I chose was the wallpaper brief was Feathr, this brief I had more time and on believe the conceptual meaning was as strong as the outcome in the end, after submitting it onto the website I did manage to get on the front page of the popular page but by the end of the competition I could not even find my design. However looking at other designs on the website I could see that a lot more time and care had gone into their designs and looked a lot more professional and usable for a home. My design I think was very daring and almost unsightly depending on your taste but that is the affect I was hoping to achieve, I wanted to completely stand out from the rest of the designs and see how extreme I could push a wallpaper design. The fourth brief I answered was Secret 7, now even though I spent a full week on the design I don't feel like the conceptual meaning was there to support it. Last year when I won the competition I had really studied into the band and came up with a suitable and effective concept, however this year I felt I was too excited to use my graphics table to come up with a strong concept that would stand out from other competitors. Thus leaving my design looking amateur and weak in my eyes but definitely a learning curve for future designs. The final brief I answered was the poster brief. Now being the final brief I feel like it was my strongest by far as the concept was there and the visual outcome was there to support it. Not only was big fish one of my favourite films I found that visualising a poster for the film almost came naturally and was something I really enjoyed doing. Now the final outcome was a little rushed at the end and if I had more time I would definitely consider using the laser cutter on the design to make it stand out and have more depth however I tried the best I could to achieve a similar affect with the time I had. Finally the collaborative brief was one of the most enjoyable briefs I chose. My partner was doing a Creative Advertising course in my uni so I thought it would be a great opportunity to put our minds together to answer the chosen brief for YCN. We worked hard on gathering enough research and insights into the brief to look at it from different angles and I feel we answered the brief in an effective and professional looking manner. I would definitely look to work with my partner in the future again as it appeared we both bounced ideas to one and another and work together as a great time to get the campaign done, she helped me get a better insight into different elements to research and consider whilst I helped her get ideas for the visuals and ideas of the campaign.

To conclude this evaluation I feel I have definitely improved my skills as a studying designer and the time pressures, the briefs have drastically developed my approaches and way of thinking to answering the briefs. Time management is still something I need to improve but I feel like I'm making progress in keeping on top of work so as I don't feel as rushed towards the end.

This is the final outcome for the brief which I'm extremely pleased with. I think everything ties in and is appropriate to Tim Burton's weird style. In the centre featuring the large tree shaped like the Siamese twins in the film, the daffodils and characters either side reflect the romantic side of the film with the two main characters.

Above them features the shoes from the small weird town Hector which Edward Bloom accidentally came across in the film, towards the bottom you'll find the naked 'mermaid' with Edward Blooms car which appears to be underwater. I thought this was important to feature because up until this point in the film everything sort of made sense, then all of a sudden the laws of physics don't exist and it leaves you feeling puzzled as to what is actually going on, and everything you thought you knew now doesnt make sense. This I tried to incorporate with the bubbles from under the ground to follow up throughout the poster to look like stars.

I'm really happy with the choice of colour I eventually went for, giving the design a little more texture too really brought it to life making it look a lot less flat and boring. I decided to go for a paper texture in the background as I found the cream and white backgrounds to be too flat and uninteresting, the paper texture just finishes off the designing tying it all together.

Here is a selection of various versions of my final outcome. After houses of changing the way it looks I decided it was time to just leave the design and focus on the background. However I did struggle with this too, with more time I would have liked to of screen printed the poster to get a nicer finish and the colours would have been better represented.

I could not decide whether to have a flat background or a gradient background as I did not to make it too overcrowded and distract the attention away from the design itself. As the film is more like a fantasy story tale but also has a modern story running alongside it I wanted something that would give off that fairytale feeling but still have a serious tone to communicate. The poster features various elements and characteristics from the film yet I feel it is not too overpowering and messy.

One of my first ideas was initially to use characters from the movie and draw them in a very minimal simplistic way so people who have seen the movie would recognise them instantly and for those who haven't it would give them a good insight into what the movie is about.

After drawing these out I then decided to proceed and try different ideas and see what else I could come up with as fast as possible. The faces I found quite hard to draw and worried i'd spend too much time drawing them all out trying to get them perfect when I had a very short amount of time to do this brief.

These sketches were very quick as I was seeing what I could up with and what would communicate the movie the best. I found that using characters from the movie and tying them in together to form a bit like a college on the page would be interesting and effective to do. In the film there is a witch who shows other characters how they are going to die, with that in mind I thought I could incorporate other events into the eye to represent what happens in the movie a little more.

Using one of my ideas from the sketches I thought about using the Siamese twins that are featured in the movie and incorporate them into some form of tree. The tree would relate to the scene where Edward Bloom finds himself lost in the woods with the trees around him trying to grab him. This I thought worked well and I was very pleased with the outcome, from that point forth the rest of the poster seemed to flow as I used other features from the movie to compliment the design.

An example of the line work I did where I selected scenes from the movie to feature on the poster.

This example is a very strong outcome for the film, the simplicity is straight to the point and fits with Quentin Tarantino's iconic look in his films. Consisting of mainly three colours it gives off a clear message that distract you too much from the title itself or what is it trying to communicate. This is definitely something I want to take on board for my poster as I want to keep it consistent and to the point.

This poster has a little bit more going on but is still clear and effective. The colours work well for the movie and are consistent throughout. Although there are a lot of different shapes and dinosaurs I feel it doesn't look too overcrowded. I feel it could be improved with a little consideration towards layout of the poster, it has a good selection of imagery however the type at the bottom is too distracting and brings the poster down.

This design is also very simple yet effective. It features one of the main aspects from the movie that the main character goes around therapy groups pretending he has every kind of illness. However I feel the choice of colour and type could be improved, the type looks childish and does not reflect the tone of the movie and the orange background has too much of a contrast with the red sticker in the middle, this distracts my attention away from the initial design itself.

Again very nice and simple designs which are extremely effective. Even if you had not seen the movie you would be able to guess what its about just by looking at the poster. The choice of type and colour scheme works well and is efficient in a way it could be screen printed for commercial use keeping costs down. This is something I am taking on board for my own ideas as I want it simple and to the point.

The iconic Indiana Jones series. The hat is an instant symbolic feature that almost anyone who's cultured in movies will recognise. The type and colour scheme works well, there is not too much of a contrast between the hat and the background which is beneficial as theres not too much of a distraction in what its trying to communicate.

This is one of my favourite posters I found on my research. It  is full of the characters from toy story yet does not look overcrowded and messy. The colour scheme works extremely well leaving the poster as a whole looking approachable yet professional which is something I'm eager to attempt for my own design. This poster has influenced me the most and I feel that I need to work on achieving the most effective and professional looking outcome I can.

Here are some shots from the movie itself. As you can see its a classic Tim Burton tale with a fantasy weird twist. Everything from the characters to the scenery and music flows well taking you through Edward Blooms life. It gave me some first initial ideas into what I wanted to feature on my poster, as the characters and events are so strong making you connect with each element that is presented to you I think it should be vital to feature some of these aspects in my design. However I do want to keep it quite minimal and simplistic as to not overcrowd and distract the design, I want it to have a formal yet approachable feel that has been delivered to a professional standard.

I decided t create a movie poster for Tim Burton's film Big Fish. Since I was a child this has remained one of my favourite films, it really hits every avenue of emotion and I believe it has something to offer for all ages. The image above is the official poster for Big Fish which I do think is great. The simplicity of it leaves you curious as to what the films about, and although the film entails many different event and characters I feel the movie poster leave the audience in wanting to find out more.

I did some quick research into other existing posters that have been created for Big Fish. I found there are not many other designs for the film which is even better that I have this opportunity to do one myself. The posters consist of different vector graphics, some very minimal whilst others have more detail with events and characters from the movie. Although these are good attempts for movie poster I do not feel they represent the film that well. You do not get any information on what its about but that could work to an advantage on leaving the audience a little more curious into what the film is about

The three examples above are the mock ups I created to help the company get an idea of where the ad's will be situated and the format they will be in. The beer mats and flyer will both be augmented whilst the bus stop ad will not be interactive but just to advertise the company to the audience.

The beer mats were a last minute idea as from our research we gathered that the male target audience like to socialise mostly in pubs, we thought why not create an augmented beer mat which will entice the audience into interacting with the beer mat and find out about Idle Man. Below are three designs I experimented with as i wanted it to be minimal yet effective. The user will have a choice of three styles we decided on: formal, casual and smart casual. After they have decided they will then be transported to the idle man's website where they can browse further.

These are the experiments I tried myself to get the three different styles we wanted to communicate: formal, smart-casual & casual. After getting some feedback from my peers we then decided on what worked best and developed them further.

I created a style sheet which I found extremely useful as it enabled me to see what colours would be best, and what type would be most suited to what we were trying to communicate. As the company's logo was in helvetica I really wanted to try a different type that would still be relevant to the company. In the end we decided to go for the type Chivo's as we found it had a similar structure to Helvetica however the tails of some letter had more of a curved flick, we initially thought this was the best choice as it complimented the companies simplicity and ease yet still brought through style.

This is the flyer I designed to contribute to our ad campaign. The flyer is augmented so when the audience downloads the app it will bring the 'I' to life, then swiping left or right the audience can then chose which style would suit them. As there are only three different styles there is a consistent theme of simplicity that runs throughout the campaign.

These are the three bus stop ads we created alongside the ad campaign. We found that bus stops would be a suitable location to capture our target audience as being young males they will be venturing out to get to work using public transport. We tried to keep the consistent simplistic theme throughout because the company wanted to emphasise that their website was straight forward and simple to use.

Here I mocked up what each augmented design would look like once the person has swiped left or right giving the option to choose which style they prefer. Once they pic a style they will then be transported to the Idle Man website where they can browse further.
