After digitising my experiments in Illustrator, it helped me get a better idea of how the finished logo may look. Trying different colour variations helped give an idea of how the logo could be changed to suit different forms of media. I also tried different variations of the shapes themselves to try make the letters in the triangle more legible, the space between the shapes as something I needed to experiment with as I did not want the logo to look too cramped and not communicate the band. Trying the logo in different weight strokes also helped the band decide what type of aesthetic they were going for; bold or minimal.

Feedback:
After showing the band the logo's I had created they were over the moon and happy with the results, they wanted me to incorporate more colour into the logo as they felt thats something that would represent their band well. The colours suggested were 'sky' colours as the bands music was an indie/rock/pop genre but the album represents someones 'progression' and 'transformation' from one state of mind to another. They also wanted a boarder around the triangle and for the letters/shapes to look as they've been cut out, this helped developed the logo's further.

After researching 'sky' colours it was useful to grab swatches from the images I had collected from google. This helped the colours vary as the sky can change many colours throughout the day therefore going for something with a gradient helps communicate what the band is representing.

These are the developed logo's I had added colour too, I am still waiting for a response from the band however I'm pleased with the outcome and hopefully they will be what the band is asking for. Adding texture to the logo would help bring it to life and for it not to appear so flat, however this is something I could discuss with the band as they may like it how it is. It does show how the logo can work with varies colours whilst holding form of the original logo and not be too distracting.

For the type the band suggested something simple and minimal. The three fonts I chose are called Geometria, Montserret and District Pro Thin, these fonts are licensed for personal use however I would have to look further if I was to use this for commercial use. The Geometria has a clean and minimal aesthetic whilst also looks approachable and potentially suitable for the band, in comparison District Pro Thin offers a more bolder aesthetic with the lowered crossbar on the 'M' giving the type more of an impact addressing the audience in a more assertive way. Montserret offers not only a light version but can extend to regular and bold, this was something I want to try and suggest to the band as I think the logo is bold on its own and will need a type to hold the design in place and give it more of a foundation.
These are the coloured versions alongside the type I had chosen for the band. I am still waiting for a response for the logo itself but I hope I made something the band had pictured and ticks the boxes for the aesthetic they were hoping to achieve. Now the logo is almost complete the band will be wanting other merchandise such as album covers, gig posters, and designs for online platforms such as Facebook and Soundcloud.

After meeting up with the band it was clear that their genre of music fit between indie and pop. I began my research by looking in existing indie/pop artists and gathered how they communicated and reflected their music through their album covers.

The two album covers for peace appear to have a mixture of different media and imagery. The red/pink colour is apparent in both designs which communicates a sense of love and happiness, the watermelon design also has a psychedelic background bringing vibrancy and energy to the design, whilst the album cover above appears to use repeated layers to create something more abstract.

Foals first album cover takes more of a hand drawn approach. Although the music is very upbeat and energetic the hand drawn face looks dazed and lost in thought, his mouth however contains a more electro pop influenced pattern bringing a more vibrant look to the design. The pattern contrasts with the plain beige background but does not distract you too much from the rest of the design.

Tame Impala's album cover appears very busy and energetic. The music takes influence from 70's psychedelic and pop, this is reflected with the use of different inks creating abstract and vibrant colours. The type selected brings more of a foundation to the design, inside the circle it helps break up the design and bring more of a hierarchy for the audience to follow.

Two Door Cinema Club also use a mixture of imagery and type. The san serif type varies between a thin outline and a bolder thicker weight, as the O's have been converted to the outline it lets the image behind become more visible revealing a cat with what looks like very sparkly eyes and a crown on its head. This reflects the band in a sense of that the music is quite random and will take you by surprise.

Alt - J have also gone down a psychedelic route with their album cover. Their music is very minimal and consist of low key beats and vocals that create more of a relaxed therapeutic atmosphere, the design reflects this as it almost represents the veins and chemical reaction in our bodies when we hear or feel anything. The triangle I think does not add or communicate anything to the design and is unneeded, it makes the design look more amateur and distracts you from the background.

This album cover by Swim Deep has a 90's yet 70's psychedelic atmosphere. The layers of inks add depth and energy to the design with the same vibrancy seen throughout the images of the band members. The black background of the images with the border add more depth and hierarchy to the page for the eye to follow. The text however is very small which is an issue however it fits with the theme of the design.

After speaking to the band it became clear that one of the reasons they chose the name 'We Built A Mountain' was because they liked the letters being put together to form WABAM. This request I played on because the bands style of music has a indie/pop sound with soul/jazz vocals, this leaves a lot of room for creativity as its bashing two genres of music together to create something new and unique.

I started by playing around with Wabam, I tried the type with curves and without curves which helped decide what would communicate the band best. I removed the crossbar on the A on one of the experiments, this helped simplify the look of the type which worked well with the edited B I had created with no curves. Arranged together they worked better as a group rather than individual letters and remained legible still.

I then started playing around with the words of the band and positioning them into a triangle as that was something the band requested. A triangle is a good way of representing a mountain in a minimal way, the type however was a challenge as to make it legible without looking squashed and unprofessional. I also tried different sizes of the words in the triangle to form some of hierarchy and make it appear more legible to the audience.

The experiments to the right were trying to do a mixture of the previous experiments and see if they were more successful. This produced a more successful design to experiment with, positioning the letters inside the triangle gave a more obscure aesthetic which reflects the bands mixture of two genres.

I then experimented more with the positioning of the type and letters inside the triangle to see if it would be more of a stronger concept. This helped me get to the development stage as I found that the letters positioned in certain ways to touch the edge of the design created different shapes within the design yet still resembled the letters WBAM, however my concern is that the logo as a whole will not be legible enough.

This is the experiment I enlarged to see what it was like at a larger scale. I tried positioning the name of the band on the bottom incase the triangle was not clear enough however this is something I need feedback from the band and if it works or not. The weakness within the the logo is if the letters are legible enough, or if it sparks a sense of curiosity for the audience to work out for themselves. After being taught it nots always the best to be so direct with the audience, and its sometimes beneficial to let them work things out for themselves then they get a sense of satisfaction.

The experiments and development of the logo I have done have helped me engage with what the band is requiring whilst also being creative and fulfilling exactly what they want. The next step is to send over the designs to the band and get some feedback on what works and what doesn't.

Tame Impala is one of my choices for secret 7. As i've been a fan of the band for quite some time, this is a good opportunity to design a sleeve which communicates the band in a creative way.

The research gathered helped get an idea of who the band members are and their influences towards music. Below is information I found on the background of the band and how they started out, Kevin Parker who fronts the band writes, records and produces his own music, this is represented through the music as its very alternative and is classed as a psychedelic rock/dream pop. The bands influences range from The Beach Boys to the Beatles and other iconic psychedelic artists from the 60's.

Tame Impala is Kevin Parker's psychedelic rock band. On the recording side, Parker writes and records almost all of Tame Impala's music, and live Parker plays guitar and sings. Essentially, Tame Impala is Parker's recording project.

After sending off approximately 20 songs, many of them later leaked to YouTube, that Parker had recorded as far back as 2003 to different record labels, Tame Impala was signed to Modular Recordings. After the release of their 2008 debut EP, Parker revealed his intentions for recording: "Most of the songs on the EP were never meant to be heard by the rest of Perth, let alone the rest of the world. They were just recorded for my own listening sake, and burning a CD of it and putting it in my car and giving it to my friends."
After much touring in 2008 and 2009, Tame Impala's debut album, Innerspeaker was released to widespread critical acclaim in 2010, winning a J Award and a Rolling Stone Award for Album of the Year, and 5 nominations at the ARIAs. Parker's ability to take many elements of '60s psychedelic rock, and give it a distinctly modern twist, creating a new and original sound was praised. Parker also received a WAMI Award for Best Guitarist and an APRA Award for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year.
In a display of Parker's work ethic, work on the next Tame Impala album Lonerism had already started before Innerspeaker was even released. Lonerism was released on 5 October 2012 to widespread critical acclaim, winning many Album of the Year awards from the likes of NME Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine and Triple J. Lonerism marks an extension of Parker's music, featuring synths and poppier melodies, and also a more lavish, lush and expansive sound. Commenting on the new-found sound, Parker said that "[Lonerism] will be the kind of music that I felt as though I wanted to make during Innerspeaker, but I felt that it was too much of a jump. Back when I was doing Innerspeaker, I felt like I should make an album with only guitars, and use no synths, because I felt like it was a compromise to what we do. But I now know that it's not." At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015 he won two trophies, Engineer of the Year and Producer of the Year, for his work on Tame Impala's Currents (July 2015); the group won three further categories at the ceremony: Album of the Year, Best Group and Best Rock Album.

This is the single that Secret 7 have chosen for us to design a sleeve for.

Lyrics:

Someone said they left together
I ran out the door to get her
She was holding hands with Trevor
Not the greatest feeling ever
Said, "Pull yourself together
You should try your luck with Heather"
Then I heard they slept together
Oh, the less I know the better
The less I know the better
Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side
No surprise when you're on his shoulder like every night
Oh my love, can't you see a child on my mind
Don't suppose we could convince your lover to change his mind
So goodbye
She said, "It's not now or never
Wait 10 years, we'll be together"
I said, "Better late than never
Just don't make me wait forever"
Don't make me wait forever
Don't make me wait forever
Oh my love, can't you see yourself by my side?
I don't suppose you could convince your lover to change his mind
I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your face, now I can't erase
Giving in to all his bullshit
Is this what you want, is this who you are?
I was doing fine without ya
'Til I saw your eyes turn away from mine
Oh, sweet darling, where he wants you
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"
Said, "Come on Superman, say your stupid line"

Above are examples of albums and single artwork for Tame Impala. As the band have a strong 60's psychedelic influence, this is apparent throughout their artwork and reflects what the music is trying to communicate. As the music is very dream-like and pop rock, the use of paint splashing and running through different colours suggests the creativity and freedom within the music. The use of imagery in the artwork also have been taken using a polaroid camera of some kind which really reflects the 60's and 70's when film photography was emerging. This could suggest that the music has been preserved from those times and is now being released back in society for people to regain a taste for psychedelic rock and the creativity it expresses.

Etta James - At Last

Etta James was known worldwide for her powerful ballads and timeless music. The classic song 'At Last' remains one of the most recognisable and timeless soundtracks, it reaches out across all generations and still has the same effect now as it did back then. Etta's powerful and raw vocals alongside a sweeping orchestra help build a song that has remained in peoples minds today. I would like to capture and communicate to the audience these elements without giving too much away.

The song became Etta Jamessignature song and was the third in a string of successful songs from herChess Records debut album At Last!. In April 1961, it became her second number 2 R&B hit and crossed over to pop radio, reaching number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its modest pop chart standing, the song is well-known and is still played regularly on oldies radio stations. The James version reached the top 40 in Cashbox and Music Vendor.

From research I found the song is not originally sang by Etta James, but was first sang in a film named 'Orchestra Wives' in 1942 by singers Ray Eberle and Pat Friday. From research I found that in 1942 the RCA Victor studio recording of "At Last" by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra featuring Ray Eberle on vocals was released as a V-Disc or Victory Disc by the U.S. War Department during World War II in October, 1943 as No. 12A. V-Discs were sent to American soldiers and military personnel overseas. Below is a clip from the movie itself featuring the song being sang by the actors.

Lyrics:

At last
My love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

Oh yeah yeah
At last

The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

Oh yeah yeah
You smiled, you smiled
Oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
for you are mine...

At Last

Etta James version:

Looking into jazz posters from the 50's and 60's helped initiate some ideas. It was useful to discover what posters were designed like in the same era as Etta James, I felt it was most appropriate to take note of the design style as it reflected how design responded to music movements in the 60's. Using block colours and bold type communicated more of a classic but fun style, reflecting what type of jazz they were promoting. It brings energy to the posters helping them engage with the information it is offering, taking elements from these posters I would also like to design something that uses minimal shapes and bold colours to communicate to the audience as it is the most effective.
